Early in the war young Americans were inspired by an older extension who pictured war as a romantic and anthropoid adventure. They saw the war as a test of noble-mindedness and manhood. Wilson insisted on Americans right to trade with both sides and with other neutrals. Great Britain then instituted an illegal naval forestall and began seizing American ships. The first sensitive strike was in March 1915, when a German sub sank a British liner that included one American.
